in death of a salesman,why does willy believe that being 'liked' is important?

im confused.. i understand why he thinks materialism is important coz it gives off the illusion that he's wealthy, victim of consumerism etc etc.. but i don't understand why he keeps telling Happy and Biff that it's important to be liked.. where does he get this value from? why does he believe this will make them successful/happy?

Hi,

I studied this text for my coursework a while back so I'm a little hazy but hopefully I can help.

Personal attractiveness drives Willy to believe that the dream is attainable as long as you are good looking and ‘well-liked’. Part of America’s success is dependant on being liked as it ties in with the whole personal attractiveness, 'Be liked and you will never want' (or something to that affect)

Hope this has helped a little bit.
