Hi!

I am hoping to go to Leicester in September, however I am worried about accommodation as I am going on holiday exactly a week after the A level results come out.

Does anyone know whether you have to confirm your accommodation choice once Leicester have given you a place in halls? As my friend had to do that at Hull.

I should have enough time to apply for accommodation, but if I had to then confirm anything, I don't think I will have :s-smilie:

I hope that makes sense!

You should be fine, get your accommodation form sent away straight away then wait till you hear where you've been allocated

So are the Lasdun kitchens really cramped/small then? And how would 6 ppl all sharing the same kitchen fit in there and work things out?:s-smilie: Can you tell me what the Lasdun catered kitchens are like, if you know? Are they like the catered kitchens in New Hall, in the sense that the kitchens there are the same and come equipped with proper oven with hobs ontop, a fridge and freezer and a sink for washing up? Or do they do dishwashers?:p: :ninja:

From my experience Digby had a much more cohesive atmosphere than Beaumont, but I only had one awesome drunken night there. Beaumont could be a little cliquey sometimes. Stamford just sucked

Why does Stamford suck?^o)

What's the 2nd Hall, after New Hall, that's quieter/has a /is better for a smaller number of students to socialise with?

Also, you know in the accommodation, does your room come with a full length mirror in it? And a 3 panneled dressing table mirror and dressing table as well as desk? And do the Halls have a Sky Box or any means for viewing Digital TV that's not just limited to the Freeview channels? Like, if I were to put a digi card in the back of my computer in a port, and with the use of a TV licence, would I be able to pick up the Sky documentary channels and such?^o) (Am, not really sure how any of this works as of present :ninja:- is too technical for me :ninja:  ).
I don't think you can get Sky in yours room but if I remember correctly from the open day the JCRs have TVs with sky in them. =) And I don't think the Rooms have a dressing table in them, no. Just a desk

Though you can watch some sky programmes on your PC using your sky account (if you have one) http://anytime.sky.com/about/pc.aspx

De Montfort isn't located really near Leicester Uni is it?:ninja:

Nah, its about 2 miles away. Though if you walk from halls, you'll walk past a campus of theirs which always seems to be empty. I went on an exploration of their main campus last term, it really is crap, there were pockets of urban wasteland right in the middle of it haha.

The rivalry is there for some people, personally I think it's stupid and don't care, a little banters fine, but there's a facebook group called 'De Montfort is not an actual university' and the argument on it really is retarded on both sides.

I was never really involved in any interhall pranks, except when it was snowing and we infiltrated Stamford and threw snowballs at unsuspecting Stamfordians heh.

That's good to know. I've heard that they're/alot of them are savages and yobs and the like.:ninja: They don't beat ppl up from Leicester Uni or elsewhere do they as you walk past one of their campuses or in town and that do they?:afraid: And they don't share the same Fresher's Fair, do they; they have their own at their Un, right?

Interhall pranks?:hmmm: What exactly do you mean? Examples.:p:

:eek3: I'll look out for you then! Snowballs can be fun though.;yes; Especially making snow sculptures and ppl. If it snows, do lectures, seminars, labs and some exams get rescheduled and the uni closed for the day like when school closes for Snow Days?

Also, are there any Inset Days or half-terms at Leicester Uni? Because they weren't mentioned on the term dates calendar.^o) :ninja:
Reply 91
Haha, nah I don't think they're all savages or yobs, no doubt there are a few like that, but it's not like they beat up Leicester uni students or anything. :p: No each university has its own freshers fair, we have very little to do with them really.

Hehe, It would have to be very snowy indeed for the university to be closed, I doubt it ever happens. Heh, if it snows I might have to organise an army of final year students to come down to halls and ambush little freshers :p:

Depending on your subject you may get a reading week. It's not that common though because our terms are so short, archaeology get one, history do not. I don't know about geography.

How is the university's diversity? Obviously I'd expect there is a considerable international community, but what about people from different parts of the UK? Many Scots? Many Northerners? Welsh?

A reason I ask this is because judging by the majority of people's location in their mini-profile thing, everyone is going to be either from Leicester or London.

Thanks.

Haha, my location says Leicester, but I'm not there at the moment, I'm from North Yorkshire which is where I am at the moment. My housemates are from York, Cambridge and Reading, I have friends from all over the country from Cornwall to Scotland and Wales to Norfolk.

A reading week? What, to read all/most of the books on the reading list?:biggrin: Do explain; I love reading!;thumbsup; Do you know where the Geography reading list is? Because I can't find it.:s: Not that I'm that worried about it atm because I'm reading and writing the geography books, mags, prog's etc that I want to do atm.;yes; ;yes;

 Mmmmeeeannieee!! What about students against lecturers and professors instead? :p:

I notice a few people seem to be doing history, but am I the only person here doing CONTEMPORARY history????

Also I'm in skeffington House, Gilbert Murray Stamford....so....am I in Gilbert Murray or Stamford?? How does it work, I'm a wee bit confused.
Gilbert Murray Hall and Stamford Hall are two seperate halls which have been "merged" together from what I can gather. I think that the different Houses etc are considered part of one or the other though. :s-smilie:

And there are quite a few people doing Contemporary History on Facebook. =)

Yeah reading week is a period where you don't have any lectures, and are supposed to catch up on all the reading, though to be fair most people treat it as a holiday. No idea about the geography reading list though, sally (geologistuk) might be a better person to ask about that. You're writing geography books?

Heh students/lecturers would be interesting, I think too many of the historians are doddery and old though :p:

"Catch up on the reading?"- so is that only for ppl or if a significant amount of ppl that haven't done all/most of their reading then?^o) When/what month is reading week usually in? That's a shame that most ppl treat it as a holiday rather than devoring lots of lovely books! I'm not going to be viewed as a geek there, because of this and the below stuff, am I?:hmmm:

More reading of Geography books actually  :p:, but my Geog folders and essays could be considered as books by the size of them.:>.<:  :ninja: Although I'm also collating together a book of case studies and cross-sectioning them. But more exciting for me, I'm in the process or starting to create my own Geography journal/book of Geography in areas that I'm particularly interested in and recent events and stuff. And I'm also going to put together my own book about the UN and the MUN, and practical experiences and techniques and stats that I've done/are helpful for Geography. ;yes; ;yes;Sort of like what their Geography notebook/workbook/fieldbook that I'll have to do some time in the first year perhaps? I don't know what that is like yet but I'm sure I'll find out when I get there. What I'm doing is I'm doing it for me because I find it really interesting and is part of what I'd describe as being my idea of fun.

Do you think there'll be anybody in the Geography Department now (or any departemnt seeing as you're a Historian and not a Geographer)- well maybe in office hours but in September kind of now, so that I can email them asking them about the reading list and course modules etc?

I know her/have come across her on here: TSR. I'll ask her then.
