Well what are you having problems with?
Reply 6
I'm doing it too!

Im not really having problems with anything. But you said its not difficult. the point is some people do find it difficult, especially unit 5. Its only easy if you find it easy. So dificulty is a personal thing. He said "im finding it really hard".
G&P is about retaining huge amounts of information. Ive hardly done any revision but a few read through's of my book and i'll be fine.

I dont neccesarily think that there's any more information to retain than any other subject - its similar in terms of using a limited pool of information to think your way around the subject. It might just be me thinkings its simpler than it is, but i've managed to get the course down to a side a4. its all about application, not memorising vast amounts

Heres mine on RACE AND IMMIGRATION so im not being a cheeky theif :smile: :

RACE AND IMMIGRATION
Very little immigration before 1950s.
After 50s subsidised immigration from west Indies; period of full employment and there were significant shortages of labour in health and public transport. Promised good wages, decent housing and guaranteed employment.
Second wave in 60s from Asia. Refugees also began to make new homes in UK
Immigration now less.

CONTROL
No control in 50s. As unemployment rose in 60s demands grew for control. 1958 race riots in London Nottingham and Liverpool.
1981 British Nationality act took British citizenship away from members of the commonwealth.
Only live in the UK if you, a parent or grandparent were born in UK or apply for naturalisation after 7 years living in country.
Considered racist towards blacks and Asians.
Racial tensions grew, Immigrants attacked at Notting hill in 58.
Enoch Powell: “like a roman I seem to see the river Tiber foaming with much blood”. excessive immigration causing racial violence.
Liberal conservatives and Labour: support multi-cultural society with tolerant attitude to racial minorities and diversity. Controlled immigration.
Centre Conservatives: supports control on immigration. Insists racial minorities should integrate.
Right Wing Conservatives: Opposed to immigration. Tough on asylum seekers.
Liberal Democrats: Believe in tolerant multi race society. Open policy towards all.

Labour committed to improving race relations in 1965.
RACE RELATIONS ACT ‘65
Set up race relations board. 2 tasks: investigate ways to improve race relations.
Receive complaints from individuals concerning race discrimination.
Recommend positive discrimination.
Lacked legal powers.
RACE RELATIONS ACT ‘68
Gave race relations board enforcement powers.
Community relations commission established.
Looked at broader picture. Recommendations concerning all areas concerning race (education etc).
Conservatives didn’t care much. Labour returned in 74 with 3rd piece of legislation.
RACE RELATIONS ACT OF ‘76
Set up Commission for Racial Equality.
Board and commission formed CRE.
*advise and assist people on racial issues
*investigate discrimination and ordering change is needed
*take legal action against specific incidents
*sponsor judicial reviews by individuals
*advise government of future legislation
*liase with local racial equality councils.
BUT some institutions exempt. Eg private organisation and the police.

AMENDMENT IN 2000:
Dealt with MacPherson inquiry into Steven Lawrence murder.
Educate and train staff on racial issues.
Duty to public bodies to PROMOTE equality of opportunity and race relations.
Crimes with racial element considered more serious
Incitement to racial hatred made serious offence. Eg BNP
Police officers could be liable for racial offences committed by police. Seniors could be held legally responsible to actions of subordinates.
Race Legislation unit set up to oversee implementation.

ARTICLE 13 of Amsterdam treaty:
Agreed in 2000 by all EU members. Asserts minimum standards of legal protection for all ethnic minorities.

STEVEN LAWENCE INQUIRY
Claimed police made insufficient efforts to secure conviction. Failed to offer sufficient protection to witnesses and failed to realise racial nature of crime.
Lawrence family, encouraged by the CRE called for inquiry.
Found police was institutionally racist. Said it was in police culture.
Education for Police officers to prevent racially motivated actions implemented. Recruitment made positively discriminating.
Recording of all racial incidents.
Logging of all stop and search incidents to ensure no systematic discrimination.
Strict disciplinary procedures against racist officers.

COMMUNITY RACE RELATIONS
Poor in city areas. Lack of trust between community and police.
Racist crime = crime thought to be racist by victim or any other person
Schools and other public bodies should integrate races.
Representative workforces introduced
Racial conflict in northern cities (Burnley, Bradford and Oldham) in 01.
~~~~> OUSLEY REPORT
Multicultural society is one where all groups feel integrated and included.
Cultures didn’t feel directly discriminated, but alienated.
“Community Pride” needed - all groups should come together under Union Jack.
(alternative view)
Liberal: different cultures should be retained and celebrated.
RACE EQUALITY UNIT
Ethnic difference should flourish. Britain should be a country where:
Every colour is a good colour
Every member can fulfil potential
Racism is unacceptable
Everyone is treated equally according to needs and rights
Everyone recognises their responsibilities
Racial diversity is celebrated
NON LEGISLATIVE MEASURES
Also initiatives to increase relations to
Create equal opportunity for all
To eliminate racist attitudes and so reduce racial violence
Eg football authorities sought to remove racism from the game.
Still very few Mps from ethnic minorities
Civil service demanding more racial equality
Still not clear whether single faith or ethnically mixed schools are good idea.
