Oxford with 1A* at A level and mediocre GCSE's?

Would an applicant having taken a gap year with an A* in biology and A's in Maths and Chemistry at A2 with 4a*s 5a's and a B at gcse (but with mitigating circumstances) stand a chance to do a biology course at oxford? Or is it completely out their league?

Any help is appreciated.

Do they/you have mitigating circumstances for their (relatively speaking) poor A-levels? Although their typical offer may be A*AA, most successful applicants will exceed that, so to be a strong candidate post A2 you should really have A*A*A or better.

That said, it certainly isn't impossible to get a place with those grades. Don't pin your hopes on it, or reject another good university for a small chance at Oxford, but if you are applying to 5 universities anyway there is no harm putting Oxford (or Cambridge) as one, since with those grades you are guaranteed offers from several others.
