I'm really interested in doing a PR/Marketing internship in New York. I graduated from the University of Manchester with a First Class Honours last July (2015). Would this still be possible in regards to visa requirements? What might my options be?

Hi Caitlin,

Great to hear that you are thinking about interning abroad in New York. What a city!

Visa requirements for an internship in NY can be quite strict. We send our participants on a J1 Intern Visa. To qualify, you must be a current full-time student at university or have graduated within a year of starting the internship programme. For example, if you were to start your internship programme before July 2016, you would still qualify for this particular visa.

However, there is another way. There is a J1 Trainee Visa that you could qualify for without being a current student or recent graduate. This is only if you have 1 year's work experience in the field in which you would like to intern.

Hi CTDT123,

Thanks for getting in touch and for showing an interest in our New York programme for Investment Banking or Consulting.

Firstly, you would have a 20-25 minute interview with the Admissions Team. The team would then evaluate your application with the New York Director. If the team feels that you're an outstanding candidate and that they have a role that would suit your professional development goals, you would be accepted onto the programme. The New York team would then interview you to further discuss what it is you're looking to do within Consulting or Investment Banking. After this, our New York placement specialists would reach out to our large network of companies where we place interns and source the best opportunity for you. They would then set up a phone or Skype interview for you with the company or organisation.

That sounds like a great idea!

You would need a visa to intern in the US, whether that's in Washington or New York. Our programme is located in New York and our internships range from a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum of 6 months.

1. I'm considering doing an internship in NYC. I study law in London but I'm interested in getting experience in consultancy and real estate, would that that possible?

2. Also, I have seen that fees are quite high. Are internships paid? Should I expect minimum wage or something that covers NYC living costs?

3. Finally, I am looking to make the most of a J1 visa. I've seen that you offer internships for up to six months, however from what I've seen a J1 visa can last as long as 12 months. Would I be able to do two internships (whether I book both with your company or not) or would I need to leave the country after six months? (since you're usually granted a visa for one particular purpose)

Thanks for your message. Happy to answer your questions.

1. Great question. The J1 Intern Visa can be strict when it comes to your degree and the internship placement in New York. Basically, your degree must be directly related to the career field in which you intern in order for the visa to get approved. If it's a grey area, then it is up to the discretion of the immigration officer that interviews you during the visa process. A Law degree will probably qualify as a grey area because it is so broad and there are many careers that you could pursue with this degree. So in your case, the visa could be approved for an internship in Consulting or Real Estate, but we can't promise that. If you are accepted onto our international internship programme, we will assist you in the visa process as far as reasonably possible. Another option would be to apply to our New York programme for Consulting and Real Estate with the understanding that you might only get approved for a Law internship. If you aren't stuck on going to New York, you could also look at one of our other destinations like Hong Kong or Australia (both great programmes for Consulting and Real Estate).

2. Glad that you have been over our programme fees. The fee includes your accommodation, public transportation, our placement service, 24/7 support from our staff in your internship destination, social/cultural events, professional development tools and more. The programme fee does not include your visa costs, airfare or living expenses (food & drink). Hi Lexie,

I graduated from Sheffield Hallam in November 2015, but my grade was not as high as I wanted it to be as I received a 2:2. Will this seriously affect my chances of obtaining an internship abroad or in the UK?

I was hoping to take part in a Media and Marketing intership if one exists. Can you provide some sort of resource that i can look further into for internships related to this topic?

We don't currently have any roles in Electrical Engineering in London, unfortunately. Our strongest destinations for that field are Hong Kong, Latin America and New York. Don't worry! We don't evaluate applicants solely on their academic achievements. We know that everyone has different strengths so we take a variety of factors into consideration, including extracurricular activities and previous professional experience.

One thing I have noticed is that the experiences are quite expensive, and will take a long time for me to generate the money to pay for them. Do you know if there is any support funding that can be obtained from external sources to help with the costs, such as with my University or other organisations?

As our programme is considered to be a study abroad alternative, many of our previous participants have sourced funding from their universities. Take a look at our financing page for other third party grants, scholarships and funding ideas.

Hi Lexie,

I completed my bachelor's of technology in Computer Science in 2015. I haven't been working since then. Actually I was busy preparing myself for higher studies (giving GRE and IELTS). I had applied to various US and Canadian Universities and have received a couple of admits but most are into Spring 2017. So before joining there, I want to have an experience of interning abroad.
I would love to intern in London, Australia, or New York.
I have even completed the application and scheduled a 20-minute interview with TheInternGroup. I would like to know what are the things I need to prepare for the interview? And, are there enough internship opportunities in the field of CS or IT?
