I'm considering Somerville for an English degree... good/bad idea? Does anyone know what the best colleges are for an English degree?

As with any subject at Oxford there isn't really a right or a wrong place to study it. Check the college to make sure they do the subject (Somerville definitely does English) and then look at the tutors and see what they are in to; it may make a difference as to where you apply.

If it makes any difference, Somerville is the correct end of town for the English faculty and library, and I have lots of friends at Somerville, past and present, who did and are really enjoying reading English at Somerville. From what I gather, they are a great set of tutors.

Moreover, Somerville College is blessed with one of the largest collegiate libraries, meaning that you never have to go far or buy many/any books to make sure you have the things you need.

Oh, and well done to everyone who has a place to start at Somerville Oct '12! I look forward to seeing you all soon, and if you want advice from a third year who has been there and done (nearly) everything, then please do ask away!

Ugh must admit this thread doesn't seem very useful... must change that.
I'm applying to Somerville college for Law. Could, would, anyone tell me anything about the college that only insiders would know??
Cheers!

I agree with what Firran (who is a bad-ass swedish lawyer ) said above- the law tutors we have here are fantastic and they are all really genuinely nice people (hence don't worry too much about feeling intimidated during the interviews). We might not be extremely academically-inclined compared to some other colleges, but everyone here gets along really well. Plus we have (generally) really decent dining hall food

@Firran, I happened to meet a badass Swedish person doing law in his first year at Somerville while I was interviewing there, is that you Fred???

Hi, I don't know if this thread is at all active nowadays but here's hoping.
I'm tying to choose a college for 2014 entry and Somerville is one that's appealing to me at the moment, but I wondered if you could give me some extra info:
-what is the balance like between state and public schools?
-is it a more left- or right-wing feel?
- is there an active feminist community?
-do you find you socialise with people from other colleges or is it quite insular?
-is there a north south balance or is it all home counties/london rahs?

Thanks

In my confirmation email Somerville said:

"We will send you an email in due course to let you know whether or not your application has been shortlisted. We will aim to dispatch these emails as follows:

for subjects where interviews will be from 9th to 14th December by the end of Monday 2 December 2013

for subjects where interviews will be from 16th to 19th December by the end of Monday 9December 2013

Shortlisting decisions are unlikely to be available prior to these dates."

The interview timetable is here.
I haven't received one from Somerville yet, I expect it will be on or around the 2nd for me.
Hi, I am applying to Oxford this year. Could someone give me more information on Somverville? Many said it's a really nice place but it seems that all colleges are just nice. So I am kind of stuck there. I want a homely environment but just how is Somerville compared to others? Thanks!!!

Not for maths, but I've got an interview for biochem on 4th-6th! Hope you hear back soon!
Heard back on Saturday from Somerville, and they're offering me an interview for next Sunday - Wednesday/Thursday to study English Language and Literature! I'm so so excited, but at the same time so so nervous. Anyone else got interviews the same days?
