Half of U.S. voters agree with Trump's Muslim ban plan

Half of all U.S. voters said they support Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the U.S., a shocking new poll released Monday found.

Exactly 50% of respondents to a new survey by Morning Consult said they supported such a ban, while 38% said they opposed it and 11% said they had no opinion.

While the results of the poll, taken March 24-26, break down mostly along party lines, the difference in support levels among Democrats and Republicans isn’t radical.

About 71% of all Republicans polled said they supported a ban, while only 20% said they opposed it and 8% said they didn’t know.

But among Democrats surveyed, 34% said they supported a ban, while 56% said they opposed it and 10% said they didn’t know.

About half (49%) of self-identified independents said they would support a ban, while 36% said they would oppose it and 16% said they didn’t know.

The travel ban, which Trump proposed in December following the shootings in San Bernardino, Calif., was most popular among the real estate mogul’s backers, with 84% of them supporting it.

But nearly two-thirds (65%) of Ted Cruz supporters and 48% of John Kasich backers also said they supported such a ban.

The poll also found that a simple majority of American voters (49%) agreed with Cruz’s calls for additional law enforcement patrols of Muslim neighborhoods in the U.S.

Another 36% of respondents said they opposed such measures, while 14% said they didn’t know.

Among Republicans, 70% of those polled said they supported the proposed increased patrols, compared with 20% who opposed them and 10% who didn’t know.

Among Democrats, 35% said they supported the measures, 52% said they opposed them and 13% said they didn’t know.
