How are so many people bigoted without realising it?

When discussing politics I notice that so many people are bigots and they don't even realise they are. The things they say are so intolerant of other opinions and they act like other people are bigots, I don't get how they can, metaphorically, call themselves a football, call other people a baseball and actually be a baseball themselves and not realise they're a baseball.

Indeed, the intolerance of the left towards conservative opinion is probably the most striking example of unaware bigotry, particularly when they themselves make the accusation.
