I have an interview this week at an academy.

Is it acceptable to have a CV in front of you during an interview for reference?

Absolutely. take a few spares just in case on of the interviewers doesnt have one.

An agency I got an interview through recommended I took one with me, although I didn't actually refer to it.
I guess in a way it just makes you look better prepared, and can help if you start to get nervous you can always refer back to it.
I've never seen it being a problem.

Bringing the job spec can also be helpful too.

It can make you look poor if they are going through it and you cant remember what it contains. I tend to have a neat file with all the relevant bits in, so i can refer to it if needed.

It may certainly be a good idea to have copies with you so that you can give one to an interviewer that doesn't have one.

However, be aware that, if you need to look at it to check facts it will make it look as if you yourself do not know your own life and career very well. It invites the conclusion that some of what is written there is not true and that you have to check what you wrote to make sure you are consistent.

I have personally caught people out doing this in interviews, and they were not candidates for very long after that.

Even if it is not true, this is not a good image, so my advice is not to have any copies visible.

Perfectly acceptable to have it in front of you. Having a quick glance at it is fine. Reading verbatim from it is not.
