Consequences of resigning from your firm choice

Hi guys, I was just wondering what are the consequences of turning down your firm choice? I mean, I'm not from UK and maybe I'll study in my country or I'll take a gap year, I can't decide yet. So is there any way to resign from your studies after having chosen your firm (I have to do it, otherwise I'll loose the offer) and still keep your options open to apply again next year?

You can ask them to defer your offer for a year, but if they won't allow it, you can withdraw your application and reapply next year as if it's the first time.
