why is the working out 2*1.6x10^-19
2. Because the atom would normally be neutral. But it loses 2 electrons so it becomes positively charged by 2x their individual charge.

It would never be 12 - doesn't even have that many protons/electrons.
There are 6 protons, and 4 electrons.

There's now 2 more protons than electrons, meaning the overall charge is +2e.
