Has anyone taken the ACT exam for applying to American Unis? There's a required section of the application where it asks if you've taken English for 9th grade credit etc up until 12th grade but I don't know what to put as I haven't taken English a-level but I'm worried if I say I haven't done it they'll assume I'm unable to take the test as I won't understand it?

I remember there being a similar thing for the SAT when I took it. If I recall correctly it's just there for statistics (i.e this is how many people are taking the test who haven't done so and so subject etc). It shouldn't have any bearing on whether or not you can take the test or what score you get so I wouldn't worry.
