Why do you think people are so anxious to distance themselves from modern feminism? Personally, I feel it's so far removed from its original principles and a direct contributor to the degrading treatment of women.

I think nearly every type of feminism is ridiculous, modern or otherwise. Personally, I find feminism very different from believing in equality and respect for women.

"Because teenagers" isn't an argument against anything, though. Why should people be wrong about something just because they're young? XD

Then you are ignorant of history, not just the history of women, but how all people, men and women have treated women for millennia. You are ignorant of the history of feminism, it had noting to do with giving women more rights than men, and of course equality was the aim, but let's be straight here; they were dealing specifically with the discrimination against women and issues particular to women. Hence feminism. That is what feminism is. Creating a law that prevents a a woman from being fired the moment anyone guesses she is pregnant, for example, is quite specifically female in nature. Why people feel it needs to be branded anything else is just a waste of time, let's just get on with it. Should we just call every department within a company the "Business Department"? Because they're all doing stuff for the business? And there's plenty for good old fashioned feminism to do outside of the UK. If we could be a little less cerebral about it and just DO something, that would be good.

Teenagers are notorious for having ridiculous opinions on various contentious topics as they go about figuring out what they stand for. Revisit your own replies to other members and it'll refresh your memory on this.

The core tenets of feminism I agree with. Equality for women! Who could disagree with that?

The issue are what exactly constitutes equality and what its sources are. There are the traditional issues of pay equality, voting and all that good stuff that everyone agrees on. So many feminists are silent on a lot of huge issues. What about babies being aborted just because they're girls in a lot of minority communities in the UK? I rarely hear feminists go on about that, they're too busy sipping chai lattes and insisting on the use of neutral pronouns. What about the complete misogyny displayed in so much pornography?

Historical feminism had real heroes that were strong and courageous, modern day feminism mostly just has angry, self-righteous oldies.

The big problem is it's a completely one way, you have no idea who's honking you. It could be the fittest bloke in the world or a random fat man. For most women, it's very intimidating.

I agree with all of this, so why do you think all kinds of feminism are ridiculous. The above mentioned types steal the limelight, but there are more who are helping girls to read and write and protecting them from martial rape. Feminism is not ridiculous.

In my defense, I said I think nearly all types of feminism are ridiculous.

I believe the whole idea of men and women being "independent" has basically set us up for a war against each other, where we refuse to be helped instead of having a peaceful co-existence. People are naturally dependent on one another and I don't see anything wrong with that.

More controversially, I think having both men and women in the workplace has led to us essentially outsourcing the raising of our children to schools and other child "professionals" - in addition, even with 2 people working I think most of 1 person's wage just goes on the mortgage these days which is mental.

Really? Think about it, the feminism you are talking about is practised by very few. Compare that to the efforts around the world of teachers and social services and divorce lawyers etc etc people practising actual feminism. Your comment is a bit like thinking that most people are ridiculous because you see a few of them in the tabloids.

Women being independent is not feminism. Not every human being can or wants to be independent financially. But every human has the right as an adult to make their own decisions independently. That is feminism. Surely you don't have an issue with that?

Yes, there are problems that come with both people with children working, but we can work toward a balance hopefully. Keeping woman in the home takes away their ability to fend for themselves as they get older or if they divorce or want to return to the workforce. Yes it may be great for the kids but it's often a risky deal for the mother. Making that deal better is the job of feminists. How ridiculous is that?

Everyday feminism is the best kind. I feel as if most of the big issues have been "won" and the rest arn't really addressed. Modern day feminism, it seems wants to turn girls into boys...a prospect you might not disagree with, but one I disagree with vehemently. There's nothing wrong, of course, with being strong or adventurous or whatever. It's just when someone decides the best type of girl is essentially to develop traditionally masculine traits, I have an issue.

Men and women are different, whether we like it or not. We're wired differently. We have many things that are the same and many differences too. One current difference at the moment is that the Army is being forced to put women on the frontline, if they want to be there. The only problem is...very few can pass the fitness tests, so they are lowering the fitness standards for women to be in the infantry just to fulfil this feminist agenda. I don't think women should be on the front line and I haven't met a soldier who thinks they should be.

I believe, as you say, feminism is all about choice but it seems to me unless your "choice" is to go out and work, be independent and somewhat ruthless, you're "behind the times" and not advancing the cause. I think a lot of the backlash against feminism these days is that a lot of modern day women do want to make more traditional choices, sometimes they want the man to lead and stay at home and look after the kids as well as having the ability to go out and work etc (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I'm really against a one size-fits-all approach, some families will need to have 2 people working, some won't. With the caveat, I feel that as soon as kids come into the situation they most important thing and having their Mummy or Daddy to look after them, when they're small, is way better than living in a bigger house or having a second car.

Perhaps, my opinion is distorted by the media and other sources but this does seem to be the way of it to me.

No, the big issues haven't been won, maybe in the Cotswolds and Kent for you and I but try and think outside of your privileged little environment.

As for the army, if they physically can't do it, then that's that. I don't know enough about this to comment. It doesn't have anything to do with equality, apart from they should let the women try out but the fitness criteria should not be changed. Good to try it out though.

As I said I have no time for this backlash, because I have no time for privileged silly feminism. I have no time for either. Neither should you. There are far too many real issues.

Having a mummy and daddy look after them better than a bigger house or car....it's not all about the children, being denied a career should not happen. And no, we don't all want to work just for that bigger house and better car. That's a little patronising. But yes, make sure you create the best environment for your kids, and you have a choice to be a housewife if you want, nothing wrong with that at all.
