# Mechanics confusing question!!! M1 SOLOMON PAPER

Why bother with a post grad course - waste of time? 17-10-2016
1. the question asks about a cable car hanging between a valley on two strings...
they then ask what happens to the tension in each of the strings when a gust of wind blows through the valley... the answer is that both of the strings experience an increase in tension- i dont get why though... say the wind was blowing from left to right surely the string angled to the left will increase in tension and the string angled to the right will decrease in tension??

If it's in a valley you could only really get wind perpendicular (or close to it) to the wires holding the cable car

higher as it will now have a horizontal component as well as vertical

but if a cable car was hanging from a valley the strings would have been diagonal so they would already have had a horizontal component??
what am i not understanding here?

the wind would be trying to push the cable car forwards and so would the tension try to pull it backwards
i dont get how the backwards tension would act though

Tension is proportional to extension of the cable. If you push the car forward you are essentially lengthening the cables and a component of the tension with act backwards

it was solomon paper L and they say that the perpendicular distance between force x, which acts from c to a, and pivot d is 2root2 but i keep getting just root2... if you ever get a min would you take a look at it?
