renal acid base balance

I am really struggling with understanding the metabolic competent of the Acid-Base balance renal mechanism.

First of all, do all the renal (acid base balance) mechanisms work under physiological conditions, or only during acidosis/alkalosis?

It's a homeostatic mechanism so yes it's working all of the time to maintain your pH

Renal is tricky to get your head round, and in my opinion not really worth the time and effort to properly understand. Just make sure you can identify a metabolic/respiratory acidosis/alkalosis from a blood gas, and know some common causes of each, and move on in your revision

Literally all you'll ever need to learn acid-base stuff. Look at the bird's eye view bit on the front page first
