Applying to UK universities

My son is an American student and he only applied to Cambridge last year along with American Universities.Cambridge gave him an offer but it is so harsh that he is not sure if he can make it. But the process has made him realize that he should have applied to other colleges in UK and he wants to find out what he can do now. Can he apply to another college like Imperial or LSE for 2016? Do these colleges entertain summer applicants who may have missed their main offer. Please advise, he really wants to explore UK option before making up his mind.

Neither Imperial or LSE participate in Extra (the current option if you reject your offers now) or Clearing (the remaining option for applicants who miss their offer) and if they were their requirements would likely be at a similar level to Cambridge (depending on the subject).

If he has places remaining on his UCAS form he could try applying now to the next tier of universities though. Which course is he interested in? He can't change his personal statement, just add the additional universities/courses to his UCAS form, and if they have spaces they may still consider him (although it's very late in the process so popular unis and courses are probably full). You could also email them first to check, so you don't waste a place on a speculative choice that's already full.
