Integration by substitution
Can integration by substitution be used in any case? Why does it work even when the substitution is replacing a variable with a constant? I thought things like this didn't usually work for variable terms?

You can always perform a substitution, whether it's a useful or not is another matter entirely. Replacing a variable with a constant is nonsensical, could you give an example of this?
