Ir has a crappy built in video card and for home use Pentium 4's offer very poor value.

They might be on the expensive side, but they will do the job.

build your own - by far the cheapest and you'll get the exact components you want. If not then I would only ever get Dell.
that computer you linked to has an old chipset (Intel 845), get a 865 or 875 instead.

I recommend Evesham. They're a lot cheaper than Alienware (but the cases aren't as nice). For a standard desktop, you'd be looking at the Axis or Evolution series.

Alas, not the case anymore. Bulk buying by large companies lets the honest ones sell damn good pc's at a discount price. Building your own is something to do for the experience and fun of it, rather than getting the best value. Although, you do get to choose every component: but if you know where to look, you can buy a pre-made pc with the right stuff.

If you are only going to do office work and surfing on the internet the Cheapest Dell Inspiration notebook should be interesting.

You can get it with some minimal software for about £600.

    http://www.dell.co.uk

However, if you are going to play powerful games on it it is merely a question about what you can afford. The more you spend the more powerful a computer you can get.

Why even spend £300 on an office computer though? If you're just using it for office and the internet £300 quid will get you a nice system. I reckon I can build my sister a 2.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, new 17" monitor for £350 with a legal version of XP.

Their £600 one on the front page looks like quite good value.

But the components will be crap - 2.6Ghz AMD processor would be good, but that costs you 150 quid to start. With a crappy mobo, crappy cheapo ram, a crappy hardisk and a crappy monitor, you're up to 350-400 already - and then there's no graphics card, so it's still crappy....and then you gotta buy the case and the CD drive and the PSU!!!! I'm looking to make my own computer, and i assure you, it's cheaper to buy pre-built if you're going for a crappy computer all round!

I have built many computers based on the K75SA motherboard (costs £22) and none of them have ever had any slighlt problems.

    Motherboard £25
Althlon XP (Barton) 2600 with FAN £62
    Case £18
    17" Samsung Monitor £65
    512mb RAM £45
    Floppy drive £4
    DVD-ROM £20
    CD-RW £20
    WIndows XP oem £68
    Microsoft Internet Keyboard £10
    Optical Mouse £7
GFORCE 128MB RAM video card £35

    Which comes to £379

This is all brand new and is quite a lot better spec than the most basic PC from PC World is is probably cheaper. Its better than my PC and MY is very reliable and cope with anything I through at it.

Source www.microdirect.co.uk, I can also get between 5-10% student discount on top of this price.

I used to when I was was about 13/14 me and my mate had a little business buying old 386's, fitting a 486 motherboard into them, finding an old cheap dot matrix printer and selling the whole thing for like £200 - £300 quid.

We could easily make £100 profit per system, however my mum put a stop to doing it as it was a bit dodgy since we were selling ilegal them with ilegal operating systems, etc.

There isn't as much money in it anymore as building PCs is now much easier than it used to be. People are also more PC WISE so its harder to hide the bad specs.

I am thinking about buying some fualty laptops and repairing them but its a bit risky.

oh i see what you mean, the operating system side IS a bit dodgy. i never thought about that.

i think you're right taht the profit wont be as big as before, but i still think there are loads (<- losely used) of money to be made. coz i see all these systems selling on ebay for for quite a bit that area obviously made by the people whos selling it. and loads of people are buying them. maybe if you combine that with free repair and stuff...people would still be interested.

I am very resourceful which is why I was so good at it when I was 13/14, my dream was to quit school at 16 and open up a second hall market stall selling computers, and become an entreprenuer however my mum put a stop to it. I could only sell computers on ebay if I send them via delivery, my mum hate strangers coming to the house.

I think my next business will probably online, probably web consultancy but I have several years to go before I reach that stage
