Any idea what the starting salary is for a criminal defence lawyer?? Want to go into it but need to be earning a particular amount

How long is a piece of string? Ha.
Its a hard question to answer because there are many factors involved which can impact the salary significantly. As a general rule criminal lawyers aren't paid as well as commercial/contract lawyers.
I think you'd be looking at anything between £15k to £25k whilst on a training contract and then £25k - £35k within your first couple of years and then in excess of £35k after that. This is all dependant on location, the type of firm, whether you're a solicitor or barrister and so on. Bare in mind it takes a long time to be a fully qualified lawyer. (5ish years I believe)
