It always makes one wonder in these situations just how much is decentralised to local commanders, etc. I suspect you're right and it's just a sort of general understanding that harassing NATO with dangerous acts is now the rule de jour.

They've been doing even more destabilising things like flying cruise-missile carrying planes just off the coast of the US and Canada in recent months and similar things around Britain. The RAF must be jumpy as there were reports in Oxfordshire the other day of loud bangs right across the county which later turned out to be caused by sonic booms from RAF jets scrambling to intercept an unidentified plane. Apparently it turned out to be harmless and they got it to land at Cardiff.

There's no 'now' about it - it's always be de rigeur, its just that for a lot of years they had neither the serviceable aircraft not the fuel to actually conduct said missions.

Its more the politicians and authorities that are jumpy than the RAF. QRA to them is a bit of a pain, really (a necessary one, ofc).
But yes, they have to check such things, even though 99 times out of 100 an unresponsive plane is not remotely a problem - the 100th could well be 9/11...
Well, all sides ********..it's part the the art of war..disinformation/counter-intelligence/etc.
In any case, no one really knows if the Russians actually employed EW nor the outcome of the incident (in case they did)
Bottom line - the AN/SPY-1 is hardly cutting edge now (and no radar system on the planet is 100% interference proof, active or passive) and EW systems themselves and their capabilities are mostly secret "tricks in the sleeve" If the system worked then the Americans will work on counter-countermeasures, if the system didn't work the Russians will make it work, eventually.

In my opinion, it's all media hysteria.
