In general a dislocation is where the bonds of atoms in the material are not joined to anything, so that one of the atoms is left hanging "free" and isn't attached to the other planes etc. It's a break/impurity in the material basically which will lead to it having a greater resistance and being more brittle. I believe an edge dislocation is where a whole plane of atoms in the crystal/material are detached and disconnected at one end.
