I have pined after a guy for 3 years and realised that it is a waste of time. He is quite shy and has made attempts to show his interest. When I do show him my interest or tell him vocally that I like him or would like to spend more time with him he backs off, panics and disappears for months on end. I never thought he was shy as I have seen him speak to other women but when he is around me he struggles to talk.

The situation has not done my self esteem any good and I have lost my confidence and feel I am not good enough for anybody. I feel like I have put my life on hold for this guy when I know other guys want to date me. It is clear he is emotionally unavailable and I don't know how to get out of this situation as when I start moving on he turns up again.

Looks like hes relying on you to be around. He could honestly be shy, or he could be messing around as youve said he talks to others normally. I find guys use the "I've been hurt before" or "I'm scared" excuse way too much, and even if its somewhat true, its not a valid excuse. Go to him one last time if you must, tell him exactly how you feel (wasting your time, but wanting to be with him) and then either move on or get a real response out of him. Even if he is genuine, you've wasted too much time, move on girl
