I have applied to and firmed the University of York which is the city where I live, the actual campus being two buses away. My dilemma is whether I would be stupid to get the higher student loan and live on campus in halls for the first year when I could just stay at home and maybe use a student loan to buy a car and learn to drive to university.I'm not a very outgoing person and moving into halls does scare me but I feel like maybe it's something I should push myself to do and that I might feel left out if all the others on my course are living at the university. Is halls accommodation really bad? Should I stay at home or go and live in halls? I know this is a decision I need to make for myself but any guidance or just opinions would be great.

It depends on what the university experience means to you. If all you want is your degree then fine, but I don't think it is stupid to get extra loan out to live on campus and be independent. Living alone or with people you never met before who may have different beliefs is also a very valuable experience that you won't gain from attending while living at home. I am also a very shy person and was dreading moving on campus, out of my comfort zone, but I can honestly say I had a great time.
