Living at Student Halls vs at Home

I think for your first year, you should be in halls. Just because as you said, it'll be a good opportunity to participate in hall events.
Some of my friends also live around London, but by the sounds of it, further than you do. In first year they stayed in halls and in second year stayed at home.

However one thing I might have to clear up is how they allocate rooms. You get to make 5 choices of the room type in the different halls. You'd probably choose all ensuite rooms but still might not get your option. And also you don't get to choose who your roommate is if you get a double room.

Of course there is also acton halls which takes about 40 minutes to get in with tube.

I hope this helps you make a decision if you need to.
