How to get into a New York uni

Basically I really want to do an English degree in New York, or at least a year abroad as part of a UK degree (preferably Columbia or NYU), but I have no idea whether or not I would qualify for a scholarship for the full US course (either needs or merit based- ie, what grades would I need/how do they decide who qualifies for financial aid), or which UK universities offer a year abroad (not including those which offer exchange programmes in Europe, I am looking to find work in New York once I graduate). Does anyone have any ideas?
