English A2 Exam Length

Even if you have made all the points and expanded and analysed them well to gain a certain amount of marks in your exam essay, can examiners take away marks if they feel the length of the essay is too short?
Sorry you've not had any responses about this. :frown: Are you sure you've posted in the right place? Here's a link to our subject forum which should help get you more responses if you post there.

You can also find the Exam Thread list for A-levels here and GCSE here. :dumbells:

Just quoting in Puddles the Monkey so she can move the thread if needed :h:

Spoiler

well band six highlights the use of 'evaluation' whilst band 4/5 are 'analysis' and 'explanation', so it may not give the best impression if your essay is clearly too short but on average if you have 3 paragraphs then an introduction and conclusion you're usually in the right ball park! although as they say, quality not quantity!

They award you on what you write, not what you don't write.

If your analysis is coherent and sophisticated that has everything the AO is asking of, then your essay will be fine. However, I've never seen a short essay to be awarded top bands before.

It should be a standard size essay, with around 5 paragraphs, including intro and conclusion.

If you have met the requirements of all the AOs, the length of your essay won't affect your mark. However, it is unlikely that you will be able to do this in a very short essay e.g. a side of A4. It all depends on how efficiently you use words, how big your writing is etc.
Thank you for all the help! It was really useful! ☺️
