Academic Misconduct?

I have been told that an essay I submitted is being investigated for academic misconduct, this was emailed to me last Friday. Basically I want to know how bad this is? I have no idea what type of misconduct it is because I haven't done anything intentionally. I've also not attended enough lectures to meet the redemption criteria, anyone got any advice for me?
It's very difficult to tell with such limited info but my first bet would be plagiarism. I'm not saying you plagiarised but maybe it came across that way because of improper referencing. You can reply asking for clarification and what the next steps are or just wait to find out.
ask what the problem is and then contact your student union as they should have some sort of rep who can give you further advice about your options
