Not that controversial to be honest. I would consider him the greatest rock singer ever. Question of greatest singer is more complicated.

I cannot express my love for Freddie enough. He is by far the greatest musician that has ever lived; I could listen to his voice for the rest of my life
He was certainly the greatest Queen alive....

there are a lot of good singers but rather than saying there one to rule them all i prefer to categorised by genre so while mercury is the best for rock/pop genre
frank sinatra is the best jazz singer, lemmy was good in the metal/rock genre and alice cooper the best metal genre singer in my opinion
He is definitely one of the greatest singers of all time! It really depends on what kind of music you like though
