It always depends on what the question asks for, of course, but as I'm sure you are aware of the format of the 'Of Mice and Men' questions focus on two different aspects of the book.

For example, part (a) of the question asks you to comment on the extract which they provide you with. You focus on the LANGUAGE primarily, but can also make structural points at the same time. You want to find quotations which support what the question asks. Remember to ensure you provide reasons and suggestions for each of your chosen quotations - Literature is about having a voice!

In part (b) DO NOT refer whatsoever to the passage you referred to in part (a). You need to use the book and find supporting quotes for whatever the question is asking. The examiners don't like you using the passage they have provided you with for part (b) because you have the whole book to use. Furthermore, this question also focuses on a theme which you can talk about, for example racism, The American Dream etc.

Part a is your AO1 and A02 mark (picking out relevant language features and explaining them). This means things like alliteration, metaphor, pathetic fallacy, lists etc. and what they can reveal about the character/theme.
Part b is where you get your A04 mark (explaining context). In this section, you must include what was happening in 1930s America (eg.racism, sexism, Great Depression) and relate this to the character or theme. If you don't give this context, you will lose out on your A04 mark so it's super important just to back up your points with a little historical knowledge good luck in the exam I'm so nervous!
