    The Spring was very promising
    And ushered in a glorious Summer
    But after the Assumption things fell apart
    With random opposition;
    Grapes swollen with goodness
    Were blighted by August frost
    And battered by hailstones
    The size of a cochonnet
    The sad Sémillon survivors clung limply
    To their trellises throughout September
    And soon succumbed to botrytis
    Which turned their smooth plumpness
    Into shrivelled witchy raisins;
    A few ancients recalled
    A similar doomed millésime
    In nineteen fourteen
    On the eve of war
    And cautiously
    The damaged crop was harvested
    Between the feasts of Pélagie and Elodie
    Grape by grape
    The gnarled winemen
    Inhaled the odour of sweet corruption
    Then hid the sticky victims
    In cobwebbed corners of neglected chais
    Where a lustrum's tender magic transformed
    The rotting ruination into sweet nectar
    An ambrosial victory
    Snatched from the jaws of defeat
