Can a student countersign a passport application form?

Sounds a bit stupid but can my university student friend countersign my passport application? I need to renew my passport this week and the person usually doing the countersignature is not available so I'm pretty desperately now...

No, students are not permitted to be counter signatories for British passport applications. The only people who are legally permitted to act as a counter signatory for the application of a British passport are those who personally know the applicant and are employed in one of the following professions, which prove good standing and respect in the community

Try phoning up your passport office and asking them just to be safe, you can also pay extra for a check and send in most places.
