Kelvinhaugh Street vs Winton Drive vs Lister House (University of Glasgow)

Hello everyone,

I will start my master program on this september and trying to find a suitable dorm. I can't afford en-suite rooms. Here my questions;

1) Do all the dorms have 5 rooms inside one flat?
2) Which one would you choose?
3) Which dorms are hot enough in winter?
4) Are they mostly close to the shopping areas?
5) Do only medical students stay at Lister?

Thank you

Hi Uncas,

Great to hear you are coming to Glasgow Uni for your Master

Here are the responses to your questions about postgraduate accommodation:

1) Do all the dorms have 5 rooms inside one flat?

Kelvinhaugh Street has 3 and 5 person flats.
Winton Drive offers 2 to 5 person flats.
In Lister House the common kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared by a maximum of 5 students.

2) Which one would you choose?

This is a personal choice of course!
I could say that Kelvinhaugh Street and Winton Drive offer very similar facilities, with the main difference being their location. Lister House offers single bedrooms similar to KS and WD, as well as self-contained family flats and study bedrooms, so the type of residents can be more varied, with families and couples living in the residence.

Lister House has room for 42 students, while Winton Drive houses 188 and Kelvinhaugh Street 346 students.

Kelvinhaugh Street and Winton Drive/Lister House are in different locations, with the first being around a 15 minute walk to Campus and WD/LH 20 minute walk.Check out our Know Your Area guides to see what's on offer around the residences.

3) Which dorms are hot enough in winter?

Heating is available in all rooms and the cost is included in the rent. It'll be nice and cosy :h:

4) Are they mostly close to the shopping areas?

Kelvinhaugh Street has bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets right at the doorstep.
Winton Drive and Lister House are located in a quiet residential area, with the closest main shopping area being Byres Road which is a 15 minute walk from the residences.

5) Do only medical students stay at Lister?

No, any postgraduate student can stay at Lister!

Hope this helps you decide what's the best option for you.

Best wishes,

Sandra
