using dry mass to measure rate of photosynthesis?

I don't understand , how could you use this to measure.

Net productivity = gross productivity - respiratory loss

So gross productivity must be high, this is the rate at which the plant photosynthesises to produce organic matter. Net productivity is the amount of dry mass available to primary consumers - use the equation to calculate dry mass in relation to photosynthesis.
