How and when to choose clinical and health psychology supervisors?

Hi all,

I just wanted to know if supervisors will be helpful all the way or expect you to do everything by yourself? I just don't want a false sense of security and I don't want a supervisor that seemingly is too busy with a PhD student. So what is the best way to go about choosing a supervisor? Not too be hasty, but I have decided to try and write a proposal in case I do get accepted. At least then I can be helped i hope. Thanks.

p.s. will you work with the supervisor closely or are they just there to sign off your thesis as being original?
