Why are some animals small in cold environments?

Why would they need to be big...? Every environment, no matter cold or hot, has its share of small and big animals. I guess the advantages of small animals in cold environments is the ability to hide from larger predators, and also reduce the need to eat large amounts of food as food sources tend to be scarce is cold environments. Not sure if these are the real reasons though...
