1. Could someone guide me on starting this question?

Find the value of p and the value of q.

x2 - 9x + 12 = (x - p)2 - q

I expanded the brackets but just spent too long moving things about and not getting anywhere, am i meant to reach some simultaneous equations?

Yes

Complete the square.

if you forgot how
Half the coefficient of the term with x in(not x²)
and use that as (x-a)+b <----a in this formula.
when you expand the brackets things will not be equal in terms of the number at the end
so you must balance the number thus there's a, +b aswell.
