    From what I vaguely remember he's sort of the middle ground between Sheila/Eric, who end up pretty much buying into what the Inspector's selling completely, and the old, stuck in their ways Birling parents. Like all the characters he is used to demonstrate the destructive influence the upper classes can have on the lower classes, and the lack of any moral superiority of the former over the latter is particularly emphasised by his affair.
