What's the reason for Edexcel Maths papers increasing in difficulty?

I have been doing many past papers, and the 2015 examinations just seem to be so much harder in comparison to a 2011 set of papers (AS and A2).
What is the reason for them getting more difficult?

On top of that, are we to expect the 2016 Edexcel Maths Examinations to be of even greater difficulty?

What are the best practices to make sure you don't get trapped in the higher end and more complex questions that they will throw at you?
