I am about to finish my first year of studying History at university. I want to take this degree and do a PGCE or equivalent qualification at another university/institution from the one I am currently at. When should I start looking round other institutions? I was thinking next year to go visit them, but would this be way too early? Or give me time to weigh up a variety of options? Thanks

I'd start some online research halfway through second year and spend the summer between second and final year visiting and working out your application strategy. The application cycle you'll want will be open from the start of your third year.
