struggling to accept compliments?

Everytime someone compliments I try changing the topic or just get all awkward. I feel as if people are only saying things due to sympathy or sarcasm or they are lying and its all a big joke. I spend the rest of the day feeling awful about myself and wonder what thier motive was. I do realise how stupid this sounds. Any advice?

Self esteem issues? I'm exactly the same. I think people are playing one big sick joke on me, and wonder what they really want from me. I'm not very trusting as you see. I guess it depends what they're complimenting you on. Any positive comments about my physical appearance and I cringe so hard and want to hide. If people comment on my abilities or what I've achieved, I downplay it, but that's because I don't believe in myself.

Most people struggle with taking compliments, even if they believe them to be true. I think it's just an innate human thing.
