I honestly thought it was the triangle PQR, in which case I was like what wtf why have they just done 1/2 * b * h.. oh lord
That happened to me on an FP1 paper - don't worry - just make sure you have some time to check your answers. It's helped me quite a bit.

Almost all the time you'd know straight away from looking at your diagram where the coordinates are - this is why diagrams are pretty important in conic section questions and coordinate geometry questions so you know your coordinates. But specifically, when it comes to your question, it depends on the situation - i.e. the type of question.

In FP1 and C1 you know the heights and bases already via inspection after drawing your diagram. I think I know what you're getting at, but it's trivial after drawing a good diagram imo. So do that more often.
