My parents live in a town surrounded by countryside. In general the roads are ok, but there are a fair few blind corners. I've had a few hairy encounters on them, including one dickhead who decided to overtake someone on one of these bends. Of course, at that moment, I was also coming around the bend.. I was saved a head-on collision by my cat-like reflexes and well-maintained brakes.

He just sped off. I found the next lay-by and had a little cry.

I was in a speedy carriageway when the bumper of the van in front of me (or some other kind of very large trim) broke off and flew right towards my car. I swerved like in the movies like a james bond movie and just about avoided it. It was quite distressing, if it was to hit my car my beautiful ford wouldve been severely damaged or worse, I couldve lost control.

I was pretty proud of my reaction though.

Probably when I was driving at about 50-60 on a fairly fast moving back road and someone blows through this junction: https://goo.gl/maps/1ZHYCxH5G9z at about 40mph without even slowing down. Brakes simply couldn't scrub that much speed off in that small of a distance and since there was oncoming traffic I couldn't do much. Mostly polished out though!

Whilst behind the wheel: being shunted off the motorway by an 18-wheel lorry. This was a good few years ago - the police turned up, the driver admitted he'd forgotten he was overtaking a car. The lorry hit the rear of my car, half-spun it, and I exited "stage-left" over a small ditch and into a granite cliff face. I got out of the car with just bruises.

Worst I've seen: a car in Egypt going at high speed under a stationary lorry, which resulted in the entire top half of the car being sliced cleanly off. Think of taking the top off a boiled egg - it was similar. Definitely no survivors.

oh ****, thats like my worst nightmare. considering it was a woman in the video and my girlfriend was in the car at the time. not sure what to think of that video, sad thing is theres no way to avoid a situation like that either, just bad luck

Damn, I've seen some ****ed up **** on the internet but that was disturbing. Especially the cries of - I'm guessing - her children.

I was aware of my surroundings at the time, but yes even that wont be enough as you can never tell whose gonna be next to you on the left lane. I did check my right mirror as I instinctly do when I make a turn, but in the situation I did not have time to check blind spot.

It's definitely a situation that got to do with luck. If their happened to be a car in my blind spot that could have gone terribly wrong. But I guess understanding your surroundings at all times is what would help there.

For future reference, I very much doubt that the car was insured. Almost all insurance policies have small print about driving ''in accordance with a license'' these days :/

I think that one of my scariest driving moments has been being hit by a driver side-on one weekend. I was the front passenger, and she hit the door next to me. Completely wrote off a car, and it didn't help my mood that she immediately got out, looked at the bits of car scattered across the road, and quickly announced that the car's owner didn't know that she had it, before disappearing and leaving us (and the car's legitimate owner, who turned up a few minutes later) with a road full of broken car parts.

Also had to negotiate a car that I found facing the wrong way in the fast lane of a motorway in front of us at 50mph once, that was fun.
