If I do great in art alevel and also succeed in my foundation art year, will my bad grades in sociology and geography ruin chances of me going to uni to do an art based course??

It probably depends a bit on the university. For some universities, all they will care about is your talent in art, demonstrated by your art grades and your portfolio. If they feel you're a strong enough artist, they will probably be willing to overlook your grades.

At other universities, maybe those that offer fine art/art practice but aren't a particularly arts focused university, they may prefer candidates with three strong A-levels for various reasons, especially if they have lots of candidates apply and are struggling to decide who to interview.

The art foundation year and your portfolio are usually the most important parts of your application though, so poor grades in other subjects shouldn't prevent you going on to study something arts based at university.

When you go to open days etc, this would be a good question to ask, or you could email admissions departments to ask how much they care about your other A-levels. This will give you a good sense of where to avoid applying.
