Should I do an MEng in Comp Sci?

I'm finishing my second year of computer science at Queen's Belfast and I'm not sure whether I should do a masters or not. The way my uni works I have to decide this year and then am locked in and can't just graduate with a bachelors. Would anyone that's done a masters share with me there thoughts. What's the difference in workload like and is there much of a benefit over just a bachelors?

Hi! Sorry I have no input to your question, but can I just ask how you are finding CS at QUB? Where will you be doing your placement and do you know when the new school of CS will be ready? Thanks:smile:

It's good. I don't have anything to compare it to though haha. I haven't got a placement yet because I was going to do a masters and then do my placement next year. However now if i want to do a bachelors I have left it really late to try to get one. Think the new building's gunna be ready next year. It looks well so far.

Thanks, hopefully will be able to see some of it in September at the open day:smile:

I have now 5 years experience and a MEng. Here is how it goes if we are talking about your regular Software Developer position:

The extra year of industry experience from the Bsc will be a massive advantage at the start of your career compared with a MEng with no experience (3 vs 4 years for degree).
0 years vs 1 year experience is massive. An order of magnitude probably.
1 year vs 2 years experience is still large.

The difference between 2 and 3 is now less because I would say it takes around 2 years to get used to the work.
Then 3 years vs 4 years, 4 vs 5, the difference is very little. 10 years vs 11 years it doesn't matter.

Once you get 3+ years experience no employeer will really care about the fact that you have a MEng or Bsc.

Employers want people with a degree just to make sure you meet the bare minimum but what they really want and look for is experience (Personal projects are great to show experience if you have not worked yet).

Personally, I would have taken the BSc + 1 years experience vs the MEng if I could go back.

Do a masters if it is a specialisation only. Bioinformatics, AI or whatever.

The workload was the same as third year at my Uni.

Hope this helped.
