Young people need to vote. Old people are destroying the UK

This country is being torn apart by conservative cretins who think they know everything, hell-bent on taking us 100 years back in the past.

Michael Gove dragged our education system kicking and screaming back in time. There was no scientific basis for it - in fact, the scientific evidence, and real world experience - tells us that our economy would be better-off with a more liberal system. It was based purely on the whims of Gove and his followers, because it was better "back in their day". We spent millions of pounds to cater to the nostalgic urges of some old farts, and the education of our children is suffering because of it.

Theresa May, who has a degree in Geography of all things, decided that she's qualified to make complex technical decisions. She is introducing her "Snooper's Charter", a new piece of legislation which will violate our privacy by forcing Internet Service Providers to keep a log of EVERY connection our computers make. She claims that this will "reduce terrorism", even though computing experts and even top intelligence officials disagree, and say that all this will actually do is put our information at great risk - but of course, the old generation knows best, so she's been applauded by elderly technophobes. What most people don't know, though, is that Theresa, with her degree in geography, severely underestimated how much it would cost to implement this legislation. The cost could actually end up as high as £2 billion. While we sit here bitching about the EU taking our money, we're spending billions on laws that don't do anything.

But it seems that wasn't enough uninformed meddling for our government. They've now decided to introduce forced age verification for porn sites on the internet. How? Nobody knows - the government certainly don't, but they'll spend billions trying! Why? To appeal to some lazy mums who can't be arsed to monitor their own children's web activity, but who want their children to grow up to be miserable, sexually repressed conservatives just like they are! Fortunately the Conservatives have already been taking steps toward protecting us from the vile act of sex by banning an arbitrary list of sex acts in porn such as "female ejaculation", and forcing internet service providers to block porn by default so those lazy mums need to do EVEN LESS PARENTING!

The Tories' recent shenanigans include amending the contracts given to scientists so that they're unable to lobby for policy change with the results of their research. So don't expect to hear anything negative about fracking in the future - our government is protecting us from science! Of course, the Daily Mail won't report on this. And even if they did, nobody would care, because it seems that most British voters don't believe in science.

And let's not forget the "Psychoactive Substances Act", another legislative masterpiece hand-crafted by the great Theresa May. For decades we've been prevented from treating people with PTSD, depression, anxiety and other psychiatric illnesses due to draconian drug laws. We've been filling up our prisons with decent people. And an overwhelming amount of recent research shows that these drug laws don't actually affect how many people take drugs. But the British populace know better than to believe all that science mumbo jumbo! We've decided that the Psychoactive Substances Act is a great idea. A law that literally bans all drugs. Not a list, it just bans everything that affects the brain (except nicotine and alcohol, which together kill 106,000 people per year - but they're not evil like drugs). It makes scientific research EVEN HARDER, and the exact same legislation was tried in Ireland and it INCREASED DRUG USE! But forget about the stats, we know what we're doing.

These uninformed old morons are running this country into the ground. Young, educated people need to start voting.

In retrospect this post was a bit OTT and the insults were unnecessary. I didn't mean to generalize old people, there are many exceptions, and I didn't mean to suggest that they're the only ones that are anti-science or illogically conservative. Sorry.

Then why are you voting to remain in the single most regulated economy in the world

I agree, the future belongs to the new generation, our opinions should be more valued, and taken into consideration. On the other hand, I still think should older people should have a part in it because they are wise and experienced in a sense.

And that, in a nutshell, is why older generations hate the youth.
Yes, all those old people who helped to form the NHS in the first place
yeah great thread OP, show some flaming respect :colonhash:
Alternatively those of us voting right could say we should exclude young idealistic voters with no experience in the real world. Not a strong argument on either count, you can't exclude a group of people from voting just because you disagree with them. But that's the left all over, really.
There will be no UK. You're referencing our glorious European state that awaits us....Brilliant, would rather join America as the 52nd or 53rd state or whatever it is. More in common with mercans than those mainland europeans.

I don't mind young people voting, I'm young myself lol... but who on earth do you think you are to generalise and brand an entire generation as "uninformed". In my opinion, it's quite the opposite actually... they've lived much longer than I have and I ought to at least respect their opinion, it's not like I have to listen to it but at least take it into consideration and show them some respect...

If you want to stay in the EU, then fine, that's your opinion, but if you wish to make a proper case for your side of the argument, then here's a tip for you - make your arguments more decently, respectfully and less insultingly then people might listen to you.

If you don't like it make sure you vote for someone else at the next general election.

How young are we talking, lowering the voting age?

And now they're voting in a party that's systematically dismantling it, but they think it's all because of immigrants.

Sorry what? Who mentioned the EU? I mentioned several laws that are contrary to scientific fact. I don't care how long you've lived, if you disagree with facts then you're simply wrong. Why is it taboo to inform people of that? Why do we have to pretend that every opinion is equally valid when they really aren't?
This post contains some entirely understandable points and i can see where you are coming from. As an opinionated 16 year old who has more interest in politics and the next referendum than my parents I'm desperate for them to lower the voting age. However, there is a large majority of people my age who would entirely abuse this and make the 'uninformed' decisions you talk about. Older people may have entirely different views but have the maturity and knowledge as a whole that the younger generation do not.

I don't think the voting age should be lowered, just that more young people eligible to vote should vote.

Maturity doesn't necessarily mean you make good decisions. It seems that the older voters get, the more detached from reality they are.

hehe
what do you mean more young people are eligible to vote... that means lowering the voting age. Anyone over 17 is eligible to vote

No. Not everyone that's eligible to vote does vote. I'm saying more of them should.
Well that's a matter of encouraging people to be more politically aware and like i said a lot of people are too immature to take politics seriously enough. If people aren't voting it's because they have no interest and forcing them to vote would mean them making bad decisions.

Sure, I don't agree with what a lot of this government is doing either to be honest and I actually agree with you about things like scientists lobbying for policy changes based on research and porn blocking, but what has the majority of your rant got to do with some "old farts".

Original post by JordanL_
Why do we have to pretend that every opinion is equally valid when they really aren't?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, just because you think your opinion is more righteous than others, it doesn't make your opinion more glorious than anyone else's, hence the term "opinion". And blaming some "old farts" for the introduction for the snooper charter doesn't sound great in the way of validity surely?
