You can see how many firsts are awarded on a course on unistats: http://m.unistats.ac.uk/subjects/study/10004797FT-BUSI074_1/ReturnTo/Search (scroll down).

Different universities have external examiners from other universities come in to check that degree classification criteria are in line with others.

Some universities and courses are better than others at making the criteria for doing well clearer and helping students improve their work. Again you can see on unistats how many finalists think marking criteria were made clear and whether feedback on their work helped them improve. Russell Group universities are notoriously poor at this - they get away with it because they recruit students with a stronger academic background.

so under half acheive a 1st! :O

yh i thought so but wasnt sure.
mine is essex and its not too bad on the ranking list. which is urs?
in my assignments iv so far managed

16 merit

13 passes

2 fail (very nearly passed, a few marks off)

2 distinction

the pass criteria for each are

0-39% fail

40-59% pass

60-69% merit

70+% distinction

Im at Gloucestershire. so rank 54 currently and its on the rise.

I have managed to get so far (waiting for 6 grades to come back)

2- 3rds (both very close to a 2:2, 1 and 2 % off, one was an exam and the other was an essay i gave up on- my course is primarily assignment based.)
4- 2:2s
2- 2:1s
1- 1st

for me the pass marks are-

0-29% fail

30-39% resubmit

40-59% 2:2

60-69% 2:1

70+% 1st

so would that mean iv had two firsts, 16 2:1's and 13 2:2's?

Going by what my uni would grade them as, yes it would.

yay! im averaging at merits though.
do these grades mean that the most common one we get is more likely what we'll get as a final classification?
Pass marks for my uni:
0-39% = fail.
40-50% = third
51-60% = 2:2
61-69% = 2:1
70% + = 1st

my first year hasn't been great lol.
2 modules I'm averaging a 2:1 (about 65)
For the other two modules I'm averaging a 2:2 (55)

No it doesnt, your uni will split your 2nd and 3rd year marks and go from there. for instance i think mine is a 40%/60% spilt for second and third year. they'll take the best marks you have gained. but this split may vary from uni to uni.

but seeing that you are getting those is a god indication at the level of work you are currently working at.

because youve been getting those kinds of grades now, it could be a good indictation as to what you might end up getting.

What do you mean by this?
but the degree is worked out from the modules that you have taken not the singular assignments for said modules.
All degrees are rigorous despite what the media will have you believe. To achieve the top grade at any university, you have to work hard. I went to a former polytechnic and believe me the course was difficult.
