Smartphones, sky subscriptions, cars, fancier food, alcohol, tobacco etc. How little do you think somebody can healthily live on after rent with a phone and Internet access?

The living wage is not what you need to live, it's what you need to live with creature comforts, even the LWF admit that IIRC

The living wage is what you need for satisfactory food and lodging.

The living wage is what you need for satisfactory food and lodging. Why do you think food banks exist?

Whether or not they do, I'm surprised that people think that the Boris wing of the Conservatives will curb immigration even if we leave.

The Tories are very pro business, especially the right wing of it and immigration is good for business.
Labour are too scared to cut immigration for fear of being seen as bigoted.

Either way it won't be cut. Heck Gove even said a few weeks ago immigration could be increased in the short term if we leave in order to offset the financial effects.
The conservatives are just as lax as labour about immigration, only labour are open about it.

Quite right. This is why back in the day - when Labour actually represented the working class - they were the anti-immigration party and The Tories were the pro party. Reducing the cost of the labour they needed was the aim of business owners.

These days the Tories will talk about reducing immigration and all the rest of it but that's just a vote grabber. As we see from the stats, they've not reduced it one bit. But why would they? They don't want builders and tradesmen to earn a good wage because business costs would be higher. Both Labour and Tories are bad for the working person in this sense but Labour pretends more to represent them but they'll deride them as bigots for complaining about it. Shameful, really. Both parties are.

Simple solution. Introduce a mandatory minimum wage of £8.25 an hour (or £9.40 an hour in London).

Then it will stop cheap labour undercutting British workers.

So a builder who used to earn a nice wage to look after his family (well above a living wage/minimum wage) but no longer does due to oversaturation of his labour and being massively undercut, can rest assured because a crappy new minimum wage means he gets to earn that wage (still well below what he used to earn). Tremendous. You've solved all his problems.

There is another angle to this. More comp means less chance for John Wayne the builder to ply his crappy trade on unsuspecting customers.

In a way labour could learn from the Tories here in pretending to be anti immigration and making all the right noises without actually being anti immigration 😂

People living on less than the living wage seem to disagree, as do the beeb that have demonstrated living on £50 after rent. The current minimum wage, let's even take the under 25 rate to push it even lower is about £240 before NI, £10 NICs so about £230 before any benefits.

True, and much good is it doing them in their working class heartlands outside London.

Ask any Labour canvasser how toxic the subject of uncontrolled immigration has become for the Party.

It would never be believed.

Neither party can control immigration in any meaningful way whilst we remain part of the EU.

The Tories would like to control it, pretend they can, but of course can't.

Labour are believers in diversity, and benefit from the votes when the immigrants become citizens.

They are the party of immigrants and immigration. Everyone knows it, especially white working class former Labour voters.

Above all they are the ones who didn't impose transitional controls leading to over a million immigrants from the new accession countries coming here.

What Jack Straw called a "spectacular mistake."
