i think at the start of the novel the heron leaves the snake be, or vice versa then in the end the heron eats the snake or the snake eats the heron, it shows how nature is unpredictable

ooh kinda late, but i think it could be to represent the theme of fate. like, it's happening at the beginning and end so it's suggesting that it's cyclical n therefore predetermined, like arguably the lives of all the character. but you could argue maybe that bc they're behaving slightly different at the end it's kinda reflective of how george shooting lennie is in a way breaking their cycle. ooh n if you argue it's less predictable like the person above said (oops i forgot to look at the user sorry) you could maybe contrast the unpredictality yet peacefulness of nature and like the brutality and cyclical(ness? yikes) of the ranch (society). maybe make smth up about what nature represents. idk if that makes sense but aye yeah

Kind of as the person said above ^ , the structure of the novella is cyclical. It starts and ends with nature. Nature is always described more beautifully by Steinbeck than the description of the ranch. At the beginning, everything is more positive but we get a sense of negative events happening as some things are foreshadowed but its a complete contrast at the end!
