FRENCH! what the hell is that about? when will we ever need to know any french? barely any countries speak it. no idea why its compulsory.

-Because you enjoy it

-Because you'll be able to speak with everyone in france, and many caribbean islands, and african countries (It's an official language in 41 COUNTRIES  barely any, i know)

-You'll gain understanding of the culture and its people

-French is the second most frequently used language on the internet

-Knowing French increases your 'marketability' for employment, especially in business

...shall I go on

GCSE Engineering looks pretty dumbass-y

Having taken GCSE Engineering I'm going to have to disagree with this. Throughout Year 10 I thought it was a ridiculously easy subject but when we started the coursework I completely changed my mind. The coursework is very time consuming and its hard to get a high grade - this isn't because I'm stupid, I'm predicted A's and A*'s) it's just very hard. And it accounts for 66% of the grade. However the exam is stupidly easy as you're allowed to take notes in (because engineering is such a broad subject). So you can basically write all the answers down!!

RS is a subject I really wish wasn't compulsory because I think it's completely useless. I don't think I'm ever gonna need to use it and all i got from it was hand cramp from writing about 10 pages (in each exam!).

Well i really enjot RS. I do the compulsary and the non compulsary. The non compulsary is for dumbasses. My maths teacher taught it to me and last year he had 2 classes and 100% pass rate of mixed ability. I have actually only had about 4 teachinh lessons on it. Most of the time we just played games, magic tricks and videos.

But i think that RS will come in usful for me because i want to be a teacher and i think that understanding diferent religions will be good for that. Im also doing it at A level.

nah, i know, it's not useless. well, i think SOME of the stuff they teach us can be but i admit it's not useless, i was actually staring to feel ok about physics until i did the f-cking exam! i was so pissed off, that's why i listed it.

RS. Sometimes interesting, but very pointless. And the theologians and philosophers you cover, tend to have ideas with very obvious logical flaws (mainly Thomas Aquinas whose 5 'proofs' say exactly the same thing but in different ways, and his justifications are non-sensical), and it annoys me to have to explain and justify an idea in an exam as if it is worthy of any thought at all. This isn't to say that certain religions arn't right, its just that many people who claim to have prooved them, have evidently not.
Its not the most useless study by far but i have to say one of the easiest GCSE's has to be the foundationg chemistry exam, i resat it last yr along side my a levels because i wanted a science gcse and omg i couldn't believe how easy it was and how stupid i must have been the yr b4 to have got a D in it in the first place lol (granted i rarely had teacher due to him being ill so it was physics tht brought it down) the only reason i did foundation was because i could never be bothered goin to the lesson as i had better things to do than sit and learn things i already knew plus nearly all my friends were free in tht period so just hung round with them, i'm sure higher would have been alot harder but seriously the paper was and hour and a half long and i finished it in 20 mins but had to sit there acting like i was doing something whilst i waited for my friends to finish so we could got to the pub lol (they were doing higher so took them longer) i also think the fire alarm went off during tht exam too lol.

I got a C in the end which was the highest grade i could get haha

At GCSE:

Business studies, psychology, economics, fishing, agricultural studies, food technology, dance etc.

These are pointless at GCSE level, but many are respected at higher levels so please don’t flame me for this!

MUSIC is not pointless!!! It's wicked! and fun! and enjoyable! and shows you've got broader talents that just reading a textbook! (Though as i am pretty much tone deaf...it is what i do but SHUSH) I loved composing! And coursework didn't really feel like a drag

BUT the exam is this friday... and i am so scared :frown: Because i suck at those papers!

But music isn't pointless
child development! i just looked at a past paper and you have to name why a child may have a temper tantrum!

I've heard that music is really hard.

Not really pointless either, shows you're pretty motivated - like Art.

Music is NOT easy - the exam is really quite tricky, and I only got 90% on coursework despite playing the sax to grade 8 standard.

Also, art requires a lot of time to be input and is far from pointless - my drawing and analytical skills have definitely improved in the last year since I have been doing academic art.

Music at GCSE? Playing Grade 8 sax??

Its not wonder you only got 90%...do you know how they mark it?
Grade 5 is the "more difficult" level, and any higher grades gain NO extra credit, but are more likely to have mistakes in, due to the pieces being harder. If youd played a Grade 5 sax piece you probably would have got 100%.

As for the exam being tricky, I think if you can actually play sax to grade 8 standard it should be an absolute doddle. I play drums and nothing else and did at least 75% of the exam without even hearing the CD!

My friend does it!

Chose fishing as his subject for the whole course.
I wonder if people who automatically come up with P.E have actually ever seen the syllabus, or a textbook, or anything for that matter?
The theory side, which is actually pretty difficult, is a combination of P.E and Biology, and there are also some psychologocial aspects to it.
I don't think it's pointless, although careers from it are limited, because it means you stay healthy and learn about what the point of P.E. even is. Besides, it's interesting and has kept me sane over the past couple of years within my "academic" subjects which are boring as anything.
The practical side is easy if you're an all-round good sportsperson, but if you just specialise in one sport, like a lot of my class do, then it can be difficult learning a new sport to a high standard.
The coursework is also really time-consuming for the few number of marks it's worth.
I challenge people who think it's easy to pick up/find a paper to do after the exams are over in the summer.

And to the person who said Latin, I think it might actually be one of the most useful subjects I took this year, besides thinking at the start it would be pointless. It helps massively with words and vocab in languages (a lot of French and English are based in it) and as a result I'm finding French a whole lot easier. Italian would come a lot easier, as well, (if I learnt it!).
Reply 97
I'm doing French and Italian now and having stopped doing Latin, I don't think it helped me at all. My friends who do either French or Italian (or Spanish) and Latin don't really say that it helps much either. But if it helps some people, then that's a good thing.

However, it is a respected GCSE. Afterall, it proves you are intelligent and hard working if you get a good grade and that's what it's all about in the end!

Latins got to be pretty pointless!
