MEI OCR mechanics 3 january 2013 doubt

In the mark scheme it says that:
Initial ke - gain of gpe +final epe = initial epe
would the correct equation not be:
initial ke + initial epe = gain of gpe + final epe since it's the initial ke and epe which provide the energy or the final energy after motion?
